How to Rock Grey Hair with Attitude

My Early Journey to Turning Grey

Knowing that my father's hair went white at the young age of 25, I understood that, as genetics go, I would also likely go grey or white early, and I asked myself, 'How easy is it for anyone to age gracefully?' At the age of 35 my hair was already turning, and it was essential to honour and use my most authentic self as the barometer of beauty, prioritizing self-esteem over anti-aging.

This is my father in 1960 when he was in his late 30s with white hair and accepted as distinguished. For a woman to be grey at that age was considered aging before her time.

Sound familiar? If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve either embraced your greys or you’re flirting with the idea. But let's be real, society hasn't made it easy. Every day, in the media, we are bombarded with messages that youth equals beauty, and silver strands are something to "fix." Well, this is just a bunch of malarkey.

Grey hair isn’t a sign of fading—it’s a badge of wisdom, confidence, and unapologetic authenticity. But I get it—the road to rocking silver isn’t always smooth.

Reasons Why We Resist the Grey

"I’m terrified of looking old."

Society tells us aging is something to fear, but what if we reframed it? Every wrinkle, gray hair, and scar tells a story of resilience, growth, and beauty. Wear your age gracefully and proudly!

"The grow-out phase is too daunting."

That awkward in-between stage? It's a common concern, but with the right strategies (keep reading!), you can make it work—and even have fun with it. Remember, it's just a phase, and you're not alone in this journey.

"I’m too young for white hair!"

Says who? Grey hair isn’t an age—it’s a vibe. And let’s be honest, silver streaks on a youthful face? Iconic.

"My friends/family keep making comments."

Unsolicited opinions are the worst. Remember: This is your hair, your choice. Surround yourself with cheerleaders, not critics.

"I don’t know how to manage it."

Silver hair has its own personality—it can be shiny and sleek or wild and textured. The key? Learning what works for you.

Tips for Transitioning from Dyed Hair to Grey

If you’ve been dyeing your hair for years, going cold turkey can feel like jumping into the deep end.

Here’s how to make the shift with confidence:

Go Short (If You Dare!). A chic pixie or undercut can speed up the process and make the transition bold and stylish. Not ready for a big chop? No problem - there are other ways!

Blend with Highlights or Lowlights. Softening the line between dyed hair and natural grey helps ease the grow-out phase. A skilled colourist can weave in shades that complement your emerging silver.

Go Platinum or Grey (Yes, Really!). Dyeing your hair a light blonde, silver, or even grey can help blend your roots as they grow in. Be sure to work with a professional to avoid damage.

Camouflage with Root Spray. For those "I need a quick fix" days, temporary root touch-up sprays are lifesavers. Bonus? The grey ombré look that develops can be seriously cool.
