what is a life coach

What is a Life Coach?

  • A collaborative partner for creating change

  • A source of encouragement, accountability and support

  • A brainstorming partner for generating ideas and plans

  • A guide for goal achievement and creating lasting change

What Life Coaching is Not

  • A sounding board for complaining about problems

  • A source validation of a victim mentality

  • A shoulder to cry on during emotional pain or life challenges

  • A therapist or counsellor trained to identify and heal the cause of emotional trauma or mental illness

  • A consultant offering expert advice

Do I need a Life Coach or a Therapist?

Choosing to work with a life coach is a major decision. You might have heard about the various capabilities of life coaches and wondered if their skills are right for your situation.

The fundamentals of life coaching are what distinguish it from therapy. Life coaches do not diagnose the people they work with, while therapists determine illnesses, so their patients can be clinically treated. Therapists analyze their client’s past as a tool for understanding present behaviours, whereas life coaches simply identify and describe current problematic behaviours, so the client can work to modify them.

Therapists focus on “why” certain behavioural patterns occur, and life coaches work on “how” to work toward a goal.

What a life coach can help with.

You’re stuck.

You’ve achieved a lot so far, but you need help getting to the next level. When you face major decisions about life changes, from taking a new job to getting married or divorced, a life coach can offer you sound, unbiased guidance.

A life coach will help you determine what really matters to you in an honest way and deconstruct the “what ifs” and other inner voices you’re experiencing as you consider your options.

A life coach can help you to work through what you’re hung up on and give you unbiased advice regarding how to move forward.

You’re unhappy.

If you’re unhappy, you need a change, or you need to change.

A life coach can help you through this. Your coach will help you pinpoint why you’re unhappy (many times, you think it’s one thing, and it’s another) and help you make changes.

You’re scared.

Let’s face it: We’re all scared. We’re afraid of something at some time in our life, afraid of looking stupid, afraid of failure, afraid of success, afraid of what people will think, afraid of what they’ll say, afraid of being alone, afraid of being seen, afraid of not being seen, afraid of leaving a relationship.
